Fruits and Veggie
Thanks Lindsay for the smoothie video-blog. I try and get a smoothie a day in myself.
I know we are suppose to strive for at least 5 (fruits and veggies) a day, and a smoothie is my guaranteed way to make sure I get a good start to it. By adding strawberries, blueberries and a banana I'm already 3 fruits in. So if I can get some black beans, spinach and maybe some chick peas later at lunch, dinner (or a snack) I'm at my goal. Here is one way for me to get more fruits and veggies in to my daily diet:
- add a handful of black beans to a bowl or cup of soup
- add a little spinach to my smoothie (it sounds horrible, but I promise you, you will not taste it).
- Pack a baggie of baby carrots to work or in my gym bag. I have a hard time with carrots, so I pack a pretzel or two along with them. It may sound bizzare, but the tiny bit of salt from the pretzels makes me enjoy the carrots quite a bit more.
- Apple slices or celery with peanut butter. If I pack some slices of apple or pieces of celery and a small amount of peanut butter I can get some fruits and veggies in along with a great source of protein (just be careful of the amount of pb).
- Frozen grapes. They are great in hotter weather and are a perfect snack for those who like sweet and crunchy things.
- Salsa - I make a homemade salsa with tomatos, peppers, oinions, lemon, apple, and cilantro. It's so good with whole wheat pita, on a salad, on chicken or fish, or just by itself.
Well myy smoothie is done, and it's time to hit the road. Keep moving everyone, and remember to take a little time to prepare for your day with your food - it can make a big difference.
